Introduction / History

The Salakahadi are an indigenous people group of Papua New Guinea, living primarily on Fergusson Island in Milne Bay Province. Their communities are found in inland and coastal villages such as Ebadidi, Ni'ubuo, Fagululu, and Molima, where families have lived for generations, passing down cultural memory and community ties through oral tradition rather than written history. Their identity is shaped by long?standing connections to land, sea, and village life.

Their main language is Molima, which is part of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, a cluster of languages widespread among island communities in this region of Papua New Guinea.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Salakahadi live in rural village settings where daily life revolves around family cooperation, subsistence agriculture, fishing, and local trade. Gardens planted with root crops, bananas, and other staples provide most of the food, while fishing and gathering from nearby waters and forests supplement the diet. Homes are commonly constructed from local materials, and extended family networks form the core of social life and mutual support.

Their language is used in everyday communication within the community, while Tok Pisin and English may be used for broader interaction with people from other regions of Papua New Guinea. Access to formal infrastructure such as advanced healthcare, secondary education, and government services typically requires travel to larger towns beyond their island home.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Salakahadi people identify with Christianity, and church life plays a central role in community gatherings, worship, and social rhythm. Many participate in Christian worship regularly, yet only a portion of the community is considered to have an evangelical understanding of the gospel, suggesting that cultural or traditional expressions of faith often coexist with Christian identity.

Traditional spiritual beliefs connected to ancestors, spiritual forces, and customary practices also influence community life for some individuals, creating a blended spiritual context rather than one fully grounded in Scripture alone.

In their language, portions of Scripture and the New Testament are available, supporting engagement with biblical teaching, but a complete Bible has not yet been published in the Molima language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Salakahadi need clear and faithful teaching of the gospel that leads to genuine spiritual transformation and a deep understanding of biblical truth rather than reliance on cultural or traditional forms of Christianity.

Although some Scripture exists in the Molima language, full translation and distribution of the complete Bible would significantly strengthen discipleship and help believers engage more fully with God's Word in the language they use daily.

There is also a need for biblically grounded local leaders—pastors, teachers, and disciplers—who can teach Scripture clearly, mentor others, and guide communities toward spiritual maturity rooted in Christ.

Practical challenges affect daily life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and transportation in their rural island setting can hinder physical well?being and opportunities for sustained church growth and community development.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Salakahadi would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, rooted firmly in Scripture rather than cultural forms of religion.
Pray for completion and distribution of God's Word in their language so that the full Bible becomes available and accessible.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, Scripture?centered leaders who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others effectively.
Pray that traditional spiritual influences would yield to a deep trust in Christ and the truth of God's Word.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that supports daily life and community resilience.
Pray that the gospel would spread throughout families and villages, bringing lasting transformation among the Salakahadi.
